A general guide to ferret nutrition

A general guide to ferret nutrition

Ferrets are obligate carnivores- which means that to remain healthy, they need to eat meat. But this doesn’t mean feeding cat and dog foods as these aren’t suitable.

Ferrets have a really fast metabolism and will wake up for some food every four hours. This means that you should make sure that plenty fresh food and water is always available for them (a good guide is that ferrets will drink 3 times the amount of water to the amount of pellets they’ve eaten).

They also need quite a concentrated diet because they don’t eat much at once- so your feed should be high in protein and energy, but have a low fibre content. Their diet doesn’t need to be carbohydrate rich as this can lead to the development of insulinoma (pancreatic cancer), but oil content is really important for healthy skin and a shiny coat, with calcium and phosphorous to ensure healthy gums and teeth.

If you’re feeding a good ferret food, then additional vitamins aren’t necessary, but FerreTone is often used as a treat or distraction for toenail clipping time.
