Bradford Excel Small Animal Show
Saturday 30th January 2010 until Sunday 31st January 2010
On January 30 & 31 this annual event celebrates its 88th year in Halls 1 & 2 of the Yorkshire Event Centre, Harrogate. From the tiny mouse with its tulip shaped ears to the majestic Continental Giant rabbit, Bradford Excel caters for all small furries with championship events for the Cavy (Guinea Pig), Gerbil, Hamster, Mouse and Rat although the event is dominated by the British Rabbit Council's five-star championship rabbit show, where it is every fancier's dream to exhibit and take victory at this the premier event of the year.
Over 1600 rabbits have been entered with exhibitors travelling from all corners of the UK. From the oldest exhibition breed the English Lop, with an average ear span of up to 30 inches, to the newest entry the Miniature Lion Lop, there's a breed and colour to suit all animal lovers.
For most rabbit breeders preparations began twelve months ago after the 2009 Bradford Excel, when they paired their hopefuls together and prepared the youngsters for the beginning of the showing season, commencing at the small local club show, county and agricultural shows and aiming for success at the BRC's three, four and the ultimate five-star championship shows.
The rabbit “Fancy” attracts men and women and youngsters from all age groups and walks of life and it's a great way for all the family to get involved. However, the road to success involves one hundred per cent dedication and a certain amount of genetic knowledge and breeding skill.
The sponsor's focus will be on spreading the message that rabbits are 'fibrevores' and require extremely high levels of roughage to maintain good dental, digestive and emotional health and well being.
Show Director Michael Fox explains: “Our sponsors Burgess Pet Care are working with our committee to transform our show into a family-friendly celebration of small animals that promises to attract ordinary pet owners and animal lovers, while maintaining the event's status as one of the highlights of the calendar for small animal breeders.”
This year's show opens to the public at 9 a.m to 5.30 p.m on Saturday 30 January and 9 a.m to 4.00 p.m on Sunday 31 January. Daily admission is adults £7, OAPs £5, children £3 and Family £18. As well as watching the animals being judged attractions include the Excel Discovery and Family Activity Area including rabbits and rodents to handle and stroke, celebrities to meet and talk to about small animal health and welfare, children's colouring area, meet TV Zoo vet Matt Brash and talk to the experts on the British Rabbit Council's information stand.
