About Us

Our Forever Promise

Burgess is a company of pet lovers and owners and we are passionate about all furry pets.
We are committed to making the lives of pets better. Of course, we aim to do this through making great food that's good for their health as well as being deliciously tasty. But we are equally committed to helping and supporting rescue centres as well as encouraging responsible pet ownership through education. This is our Forever Promise - it is who we are and what we believe.

Burgess Pet Care - Food Trial Statement

We do not believe it is necessary to carry out invasive tests on animals to evaluate pet foods, nor to conduct preference and palatability testing on captive animals. Instead we achieve this by only trialing our food with domestic pets (mostly Burgess employee pets) under the supervision of the individual owner, or by working with rescue centres, catteries and kennels that have been strictly audited for welfare standards and who are already feeding our food in house.

A British, family owned company

Being a family company we have strong family values. The high regard we have for our furry family members is central to these values but so is how we do business. We continually work with leaders in small animal welfare, behaviour and health to ensure we are at the forefront of small animal health and nutrition. This is why experts, from vets to rescue centres to animal behaviourists, recommend and trust our food.

We know all our suppliers personally and with over 300 years heritage of working in the agricultural and food business, Burgess has forged strong links with the farming community. We try to source our ingredients from local farmers wherever practical whilst ensuring the highest quality. For example the grass we use in Burgess Excel is grown a tractor drive away from our mill in Yorkshire - we like to think of our food as having tractor miles, not air miles.

Cherry Tree Mill

As a BRC grade 'A' factory site we are very aware of the impact that we have on the environment and our responsibility to do everything we can to reduce that impact.

Below are some of the initiatives that we have implemented during 2010:

Water - we are regularly audited to ensure that:

  • Drains are clear and in good repair
  • Water is regularly sampled
  • There are no leaks in liquid tanks or pipes
  • Chemicals are delivered on a self-contained bund, none were found to have damage.
  • 4 extra chimneys installed on the scrubber to reduce the water pressure which means less water is now being used.

Energy saving - we are constantly finding ways to save energy:

  • 11% reduction in gas usage on boiler from the addition of lagging jackets, improved steam traps, and gas balancing unit.
  • Steam monitoring system and gas monitoring system.
  • Lighting sensors in main administration offices.
  • Conversion of main fat tank from steam heated jacket to condensate heated jacket.
  • Installation of high bay lighting with daylight and movement sensor in factory.

Waste - we currently recycle over half of all the waste we produce on site and continue to strive to find ways to reduce waste going to landfill:

  • Recycle materials both in the Factory and Administration Offices the Following Materials
    • Paper
    • Card
    • Plastic
    • Packaging
    • Tins

  • All our product waste is used for energy
  • In 2010 we reduced waste to landfill compared to 2009 as follows:
    • Land Fill Waste REDUCED by15%
    • Recycled Waste INCREASED by 220%
    • Product Waste REDUCED by 41&

Burgess achieves zero to landfill!

The city of York is to start shredding waste originally destined for landfill, and instead

use it for Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) in the New Year.

Despite all the recycling initiatives we have in place at Burgess, we still have a small amount

of waste that has to go to landfill - but not any more! We are part of the York RDF scheme, so

Burgess will now be a zero landfill company by March 2012.
